I work in an emergency room alongside many other amazing physicians however most of them lack a decent background in nutrition. Yesterday, one of our patient's had trace amounts of ketones in her urinalysis so little that it was considered within the normal limits and not critical at all. Yet the MD i was working with still decided that he wanted to give the patient IV dextrose (sugar) so she's not using up her glycogen stores and did not want to "induce her to diabetic keto acidosis. " The patient was not even diabetic and her blood glucose level was normal! She was not acidodic either! I tried to explain to him that you can't induce DKA into anyone not even diabetics but he wouldn't listen to any of it. I tried explaining how being in a ketosis can be something benign and even beneficial but instead he basically went on to say how I was confused about the biochemistry of the human body (though I likely know more about it than him!) I'm sorry, just low key frustrated. This is why I don't really like telling people I'm eating ketogenically. Most of them just give me a rant and are rather ignorant about learning more. Anyone else have similar experiences?
