Getting your head in the game [Rant][Pride]

I have a friend who I will refer to as Shooby and she had expressed an interest in going Keto after hearing and seeing my success with the diet. She and I would talk pretty regularly (we live on opposite sides of the country) and I would update her with my progress and she would update me on hers. She is married with 2 small kids and was in the process of moving to a new house and she has been struggling with her Keto diet for about a month going off and on and needless to say she was not seeing much results. She was bemoaning to me that it is hard with the kids and the stress of moving and she had a lot of excuses as to why she was failing. Now part of me that is a friend and wants to support her and for her to be encouraged wanted to empathize with her, and the other part of me raged on the inside as I felt she was half-assing her attempt.

So I decided to be honest with her and told her how I really felt while trying to be empathetic. I told her that if you really wanted to do this lifestyle change, you would be finding ways to make it work and not look for excuses to why it is difficult. Eating low carb is not hard, it is a frame of mind that you just need to commit to if you are going to be in this for the long haul. Yes, I do not have kids and I can only imagine the stress of having 2 little ones (2 and 4 years old) and being a full time mom. Yes I believe that would be a full time job if not more. Keto is not some magic button that will just make everything easy. That being said it is the easiest diet I have ever done as I have stuck with it longer than any other in the past.

Shooby got a bit huffy with me for a few days and then she did some self reflection and said that I was right, she was looking for excuses and she thanked me for my honesty. I felt that since we are good friends I owed it to her to be honest, even if it was not what she wanted to hear, I felt it was what she needed to hear. A month has gone by and she has been on track and doing great and the weight is coming off for her again. I am proud that she was able to be honest with herself, she said she has giving up drinking beer on the weekends as well as smoking as she felt they were contributing to her binging on carbs.

The moral of the story is getting your head in the mode of keto and the rest will follow.
