I have heard the old "Americans have dessert for breakfast" jokes and thought it was just a tongue in cheek remark. But the culture shock was real, every diner/restaurant/cafe I went to for breakfast came with unnecessary sugar in some way. Eg "Farmers breakfast" was eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and toast with jam - and the server bought out a jug of syrup to go with it. Went into a Foodland supermarket and was saw breakfast baked goods like mock cream topped minimuffins and glazed cinnamon scrolls (not saying these aren't in Australia too, but I don't think I've seen them as front and centre as I did overseas).
I struggle, and I live in Melbourne where you can expect a cafe to be everything-free (sugar/gluten/caffeine/dairy/fat/wheat/hormone/fun) by default - seriously, I once had to order a "soy and almond-free dairy latte".
Well effing done to you guys for sticking with it given how abundant added sugar seems to be.
