My mother has always been an alcoholic. She tries to quit but the addiction takes hold everytime. This time it was because she lost her job and is having trouble finding a new one. When I heard that she had drank an entire bottle of vodka and hoped for death, without throwing up mind you, that I either had to do something different or just give up all together.
She was overweight and I knew that bothered her in a lot of different ways, so instead of confronting her about the suicide and drinking, I just told her about the diet I was on, keto. In the messages I sent her I mentioned how much alcohol I could drink on the diet and still lose weight, a shot of whiskey and two michelob ultras, and converted that to vodka for her and even added some, 6 shots of vodka. I also warned her that not having such a full stomach before drinking would make her get drunk quicker. For people who don't understand true alcoholism, forcing someone to quit cold turkey on alcohol when they drink that much can actually kill them, or leave them in a weird state of mental confusion, where they almost seem like they have alzheimers.
I sent her messages everyday talking about keto and what I'm eating and new recipes and ideas. It got her interested in life again, like this was a new hobby. She started sharing her updates with me and it felt like I had my mom back.
My mom is 30 pounds down today and a much happier person. The diet has gotten her drinking back under control, to a much more 'normal' level. She isn't drinking as much or as often. She is starting to get that spark in her to get out more, be more social, and fight to get her life back on track.
Just wanted to thank everyone here for all of the information and making this diet incredibly easy to follow. Thank you for getting my mom back.
