I am a type 2 diabetic. Last July, right before I started keto my doc was rumbling about me "graduating" to insulin. He had added glimepiride and Januvia, and my A1C had still crept north of 7.
I began keto on July 9th. Since then, with 40 pounds gone we eliminated glimepiride, then januvia, and mid December we halved my metformin to 1000 mg a day. My A1C has consistently tested around 5.6, a dramatic change.
Yesterday I decided to try an experiment. I took a half dose of metformin first thing in the morning, and tested regularly all day. I took nothing in the evening and skipped my dose this morning, testing all day today.
My fasting sugar this morning was 97. My sugar two hours after my big meal was 118. Tonight at bed time after eating a decent meal and a late snack it was 80.
Tomorrow I am calling my doc for his feedback and guidance, but I suspect keto has set me free. I had to share it in here, especially with diabetics just starting out -- there is a LOT of hope in the keto way of eating, and I'm only half way to my goal weight! :)
