After 6.5 months on keto, I've reached my first goal weight of 189 lbs (85kg)! Down from 239 lbs (108kg) at 5'3" (1.6m).
That's like losing a twin boxspring and mattress strapped to my back. Imagine carrying that heavy load around each day. When I did, my hips ached, stabbing pain in my knees on stairs (physio helped a bit) and I wheezed when walking briskly even 1 block.
After starting keto Aug 3, I learned meal prep (e.g. baked chicken breasts, steamed veggies, and keto cheese sauce) on Sunday makes keto food the easiest to access, which helps me stay on point. I lost 32 lbs after 3 months on Keto, no exercise. There were a few rocky bits while I learned my alcohol tolerances were way lower and how alcohol has tons of calories.
At that point, my NSV's were abundant:
- no snoring
- energy all day, no more cat naps
- no wheezing while walking
- better mood, depression lifted
- fit in airplane seats
After about 35 lbs loss, I hit the gym with a trainer, mostly bodyweight fitness, working on building core and stabilizers strength. Loss slowed, but my BF% dropped and lean muscle rose. The trainer was surprised how fast my body recomped, despite my age and terrible fitness (no exercise or gym for ~8 yrs).
Today my NSV list is even longer:
- cardio for 60 min, then 20 min circuit training without keeling over
- fit size L tshirts!
- blood sugar stabilized
- can carry heavy bags of groceries, lift bins over my head into dumpsters and move furniture while vacuuming... love to clean house now
- libido is through the roof (my husband likes this victory the most)
For those wondering if exercise is worth adding on keto, the answer is YES! A thousand times yes. Maybe wait until keto is a habit so you aren't overwhelmed but go with what works for you. Increases in strength and confidence are absolutely worth it and the scale numbers don't matter as much as being able to dance, run, hike and live fully with friends and family!
Also your body will look amazing! After the 35 lbs loss in 3.5 mo, my waist shrunk 3" (7.6cm). After starting workouts, I only lost 15 lbs in 3 mo but my waist has shrunk 5.5" (14cm)!! Total waistline shrinkage of 8.5". Everyone notices and a few close friends/family have also started keto.
None of this would be possible without the daily lurking I do in r/keto and r/xxketo. The positive attitudes, kindness, and honest sharing of knowledge here have been the support I need to keep making good keto choices. Thank you all!
TL;DR Six mo on keto helped me lose 50 lbs, 8.5" on my waist, and eliminated aches, knee pains, and depression. Still obese @ 5'3" & 189 lbs and my keto lifestyle will continue. Keto is the best WOE for me!
TIP: take b4 pics that aren't NSFW so you can share here! I avoided pics and have none from my highest weight.
