"Way to have willpower." [positive rant]

I get told something along these lines often. Having only been doing keto about a month, I often have to explain that because of carbs or sugar, I will have to pass on chips, fries, ice cream, whatever. This elicits friends commending me on my willpower and internally I just shrug.

I've been overweight most of my life and have dieted at least 30 times with varying results. At some points I've lost up to 40 lbs, but end up back where I started. Always warned against diets that were too "extreme," I followed simpler diets where I'd stick to eating less of what I normally eat. I did Weight Watchers. I did calorie counting using MyFitnessPal. Even slim fast a while back. All of them worked for a few months until I slowly faded back into normal life.

This year, I read up on keto and the science behind it was fascinating. With nothing to lose irony, I gave it a shot, despite the warnings that you have to be very strict. Keto kicked in on day 2 with no flu and the amount of energy I have had is insane. It's not like me to clean the house like a meth addict when no company is coming over. I have lost 18lb so far and in keeping up with this, I realized I have had this willpower the whole time. It wasn't really observed before because I could have the fries or ice cream, but it was just as hard to plan for previous diets.

I don't want to sound ungrateful for my friends' compliments, but I just don't feel like it's that much of a sacrifice when my diet consists of bunless burgers and cheesy bacon brussel sprouts. (I can post the recipe if anyone is interested.) I am incredibly grateful for Keto and this subreddit for the constant encouragement. This feels unlike any other diet I have done, in a good way. I love to try new recipes and even on days where I don't have much time for it, the fast food alternatives are great. I also get asked how long this will be for, and my response is "I guess forever?" Thanks y'all.
