Just getting started...

I started on keto for my mom. A year and a half ago she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She lives with me and I'm her primary caregiver, while also working full time. We knew that insulin in the brain could make it worse (or may even have caused it), but the diabetes meds (metformin) actually made her worse in terms of cognitive impairment. Much research later, I found some early studies on ketones and how they may help. Having nothing to lose, I figured I'd try it for her. And since I do all the cooking, we eat the same things. We both do bulletproof coffee in the morning and then a not-quite-completely keto diet. I'm not strict about it for either of us.

Results so far? One month in and her confusion is much less! I mean really noticeably less! She rarely forgets where she is, she knows what day it is, she knows who I am and when I'll be home etc. Yes, she still has this horrible illness - there's no cure - but her days are more manageable and less stressful for both of us. I'm keeping her calories high because she's tiny already (95lbs) so I don't think she's lost, and hopefully she's gained.

And for me? 13 lbs down! Holy hell! I am NOT tiny (got my dad's genes, not hers!). Started at 236 and am now 223. In one month!

If I did get really strict about it I'm sure I could do better but my life is pure chaos trying to take care of her and work full time so I'm not going to stress about that. Maybe one day but for now I'm ok with being half-assed about it lol.

Sorry for the long post but I mostly wanted to say that this sub has been an incredible resource for me at a very difficult time and I am very grateful!
